Description
This is the front of a two sided collage. The collage celebrates the dances that young women attended at men's colleges in first half of the 20th Century in the US. The women would travel together by car or railroad to the college where they would attend a football game followed by dance. Often the women would stay over night in lodging houses with their chaperones and attend church the following morning. These were much anticipated social events by college women. Clothes and etiquette were very important. The background in this collage is a photocopy of pages from Emily Post's Book of Etiquette from the thirties. The heading on the top left says, "WHEN WRONG CLOTHES SPELL FAILURE." To be a success at the party, college women had to be properly dressed! The booklet in the center is a genuine vintage dance card. Each woman received this booklet which contained a place for men to sign up for a dance. Perhaps the original inspiration for the expression, "I've filled my card. The two young women in the upper left are the artist's mother and her college room mate taken during their time at Averett College in Virginia.
